Artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that deals with the creation of intelligent agents, which are systems that can reason, learn, and act autonomously. AI research has been highly successful in developing effective techniques for solving a wide range of problems, from game playing to medical diagnosis.

There are many different approaches to AI, but they all share the goal of creating machines that can think and act like humans. Some of the most common AI techniques include machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision.

Machine learning is a technique that allows computers to learn without being explicitly programmed. This is done by feeding the computer with data and allowing it to identify patterns in the data. Once the computer has identified the patterns, it can use them to make predictions or decisions. Machine learning is behind chatbots and predictive text, language translation apps, the shows Netflix suggests to you, and how your social media feeds are presented. It powers autonomous vehicles and machines that can diagnose medical conditions based on images.

Natural language processing is a technique that allows computers to understand and process human language. This is done by breaking down the language into its component parts, such as words, phrases, and sentences. The computer can then use these parts to understand the meaning of the language. Some examples of Natural language processsing are - Speech recognition, also called speech-to-text, is the task of reliably converting voice data into text data; also spam detection - you may not think of spam detection as an NLP solution, but the best spam detection technologies use NLP's text classification capabilities to scan emails for language that often indicates spam or phishing.

Computer vision is a technique that allows computers to see and understand the world around them. This is done by using cameras to capture images of the world and then analyzing the images to identify objects, shapes, and patterns. An example would be image classification; sees an image and can classify it (a dog, an apple, a person’s face). More precisely, it is able to accurately predict that a given image belongs to a certain class.

AI is a rapidly evolving field, and new techniques are being developed all the time. As AI technology continues to improve, it is likely to have a profound impact on our lives. AI could be used to improve our understanding of the world around us and to solve some of the world's most pressing problems!

Mobile apps and smartphones/tablets use AI, as well. For example, think about Apple’s SIRI or Amazon’s Alexa. Both are AI software that responds to your inputs and gives you results. For example, SIRI can work as a text-to-speech or translation tool. Alexa can order from your favorite stores on Amazon for you. Intrigued? Why not browse our mobile devices & tablets page...
